About the Tour Area...

Prepare to sit back and enjoy your adventure with the ever energetic and entertaining Captain Geoff.

The Tensaw Delta Region is the second largest river delta in the United States, which originates near the confluence of the Alabama and Tombigbee rivers and extends southward approximately 35 miles to the head of the Mobile Bay Estuary system. When you take one of Delta ecotours through the Tensaw Delta Region you are experiencing one of the largest wetland ecosystems in the United States. This 200,000 acre wetland ecosystem is one of the most extensive and significant wetlands in the United States representing one of Alabama's most naturally preserved areas and because of its uniqueness was placed on the National Register of Natural Landmarks in 1974.

A large diversity of wildlife and plant species are supported across the many different habitat types of the region. More than 90% of the resident birds in Eastern North America use bottomlands at one time or another. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded from the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, including at least 110 species which use the region as nesting habitat. Other animals of the area include:

• 126 species of fish
• Approximately 40 different species of mammals
• 69 species of amphibians
• Over 500 species of plants

You may have the opportunity to witness cypress-gum swamps, tidal brackish water marshes, bottomland forests, submersed grassbeds, and mesic floodplain forests. While touring the Tensaw Delta it is even possible to witness one of several rare and endangered species in its natural habitat.

The yearly flooding cycle and the accompanying exchange between the river and its floodplain maintains a rich, productive ecosystem which supporting the abundant wildlife populations, enhancing water quality, and providing nutrients for downstream estuaries. The forested wetlands and delta are one of the most productive wildlife habitats in the Untied States. These important forested wetlands also provide major wintering grounds for managed species of waterfowl, migratory species, as well as habitat for resident endangered species.
